We Specialize in Cases Others Miss
Laser hair removal isn't one-size-fits-all — and neither is illumeMD. We have specific experience treating patients with conditions that make hair removal more complex, more personal, and more meaningful.
PCOS-Related Hair Growth
Polycystic ovary syndrome causes excess facial and body hair that can be deeply frustrating to manage. Laser is one of the most effective long-term solutions. Because PCOS is hormonally driven, more sessions are often needed — but most patients see significant, lasting reduction. We understand the medical picture behind the hair and factors your health history into your care.
PFB — Razor Bumps
Pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB) happens when coarse or curly hairs curl back into the skin after shaving, causing chronic inflammation, bumps, and scarring. It's especially common in Black and South Asian patients. Laser hair removal addresses the root cause — not just the symptom — by reducing hair growth at the follicle. Many patients see dramatic improvement after just a few sessions.
Chronic Ingrown Hairs
Whether from genetics, hair texture, or shaving habits, recurring ingrown hairs are uncomfortable and can cause hyperpigmentation over time. By targeting the follicle directly, laser treatment significantly reduces the hairs that cause ingrowns — particularly in the bikini area, underarms, and legs.
Skin of Color
Many laser providers are not equipped to safely treat Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin tones. illumeMD uses the Clarity II's 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength — the gold standard for darker skin — with protocols specifically calibrated for your skin type. Safe, effective hair removal for deeper skin tones is not a specialty service here. It is our standard of care.
Why Patients Choose illumeMD
Advanced technology
The Lutronic Clarity II™ combines 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelengths with IntelliTrak™ automated coverage and real-time Temperature Sensing — for consistent, comfortable, and safe treatments on every skin tone.
Fitzpatrick-based protocols
Treatments begin with standardized, evidence-based protocols calibrated to your Fitzpatrick skin type — the clinical standard for safe laser care. Our physician oversees all treatment at illumeMD to ensure safety and appropriate care.
Physician-overseen care
A Family Medicine physician who is Board-certified in aesthetic medicine since 2017, Dr. Ravi brings a holistic, preventative mindset to every service — including understanding conditions like PCOS that affect hair growth patterns.
Faster sessions
IntelliTrak™ delivers uniform, efficient coverage of large areas. Full legs and Brazilian sessions that take an hour elsewhere often move significantly faster here.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Hair grows in cycles — and laser energy is most effective during the active (anagen) growth phase. Since not all hairs are in that phase at the same time, a series of sessions spaced weeks apart is needed to catch each follicle at the right moment.
Most patients complete 6–8 sessions, spaced 4–8 weeks apart.
Hormonal conditions like PCOS, or areas with hormonally influenced hair (such as the face and chin), may require additional sessions and occasional maintenance over time. Gray, white, and very light blond hairs generally do not respond, as laser targets pigment in the follicle.
A note on PCOS and hormonal hair
If your hair growth is driven by a hormonal condition, laser won't stop new follicles from being activated over time — but it can significantly reduce what's already there and make ongoing management much easier. Many PCOS patients find laser to be life-changing even with maintenance. We'll set realistic expectations at your consultation.
About the Lutronic Clarity II™
The Clarity II is an FDA-cleared dual-wavelength laser platform built for consistent, comfortable, and safe hair removal across all skin tones.
The 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength is highly effective on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III). The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength penetrates deeper with less melanin absorption, making it the gold standard for safely treating medium to deep skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) — including patients with skin of color who are often turned away elsewhere.
IntelliTrak™ automates the coverage pattern to eliminate uneven passes and missed spots. Real-time Temperature Sensing monitors skin throughout the treatment, adding an additional layer of safety on every pulse.
What to Expect
-
Before your session
Shave the area 24 hours prior — do not wax, thread, or tweeze for 3–4 weeks before treatment (shaving only). Avoid tanning or self-tanner for 2 weeks. Pause retinoids or acids on the face or treated body areas for 3–5 days. -
During
Most patients feel quick snaps or warmth. The Clarity II's built-in cooling and temperature feedback make treatments significantly more comfortable than older laser systems. Large areas like full legs and Brazilian are faster than you may expect. -
After
Redness or small follicular bumps can occur for a few hours — completely normal. Apply cool compresses, use gentle skincare, and wear SPF. For 24–48 hours, avoid hot tubs, intense workouts, tight clothing, and exfoliation. Treated hairs shed over 1–3 weeks; results build progressively across your series.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?
Yes. Our 1064 nm Nd:YAG settings are specifically calibrated for deeper skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI). We adjust fluence, pulse duration, and cooling individually — and our protocols are Fitzpatrick-based as standard, not as an afterthought. Safe treatment of skin of color is not a specialty service here — it is our default.
Can laser help with PCOS-related hair growth?
Yes — and it's one of the most impactful treatments for patients with PCOS. Because the condition is hormonal, more sessions are often needed and maintenance may be required over time. But most patients experience significant, lasting reduction in unwanted facial and body hair. Dr. Ravi factors your medical history into your care from the start.
What is PFB, and can laser treat it?
PFB stands for pseudofolliculitis barbae — commonly called razor bumps. It's caused by coarse or curly hairs that curl back into the skin after shaving, creating chronic irritation, bumps, and sometimes scarring. Laser targets the follicle directly, reducing hair growth and breaking the cycle. Most patients see significant improvement in bump frequency and severity within the first few sessions.
Does laser help with ingrown hairs?
Significantly, for most patients. Ingrown hairs are a symptom of coarse hair growth — laser addresses the underlying cause. Results are especially pronounced in the bikini area, underarms, and legs where ingrowns are most common.
What's the difference between bikini and Brazilian?
Bikini line clears hair outside your standard underwear line. Brazilian removes most or all hair in the pubic region — customizable to your exact preference. We discuss what you're comfortable with before we start.
Can I wax or thread between sessions?
No — shaving only. Waxing, threading, and tweezing remove the follicle, which is exactly what the laser needs to target. Shaving leaves the follicle intact and in place.
Can I get laser treatments while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We do not treat during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, we can discuss timing and appropriate treatment areas at your consultation.
Can you treat over tattoos?
We don't fire directly over tattoos. We can safely work around them with appropriate borders — mention it at your consultation so we can plan accordingly.
